| An extract from Obituaries And Profiles 1 : JOHN SHEPPARD |
|
| John Sheppard Snr. was born in Yorkshire, England in 1803, arriving in Australia about 1838. He married Sarah at Kyneton, Victoria in 1843 and my grandfather John Sheppard Jnr. was born in Kyneton in 1856.
My grandfather, John Sheppard Jnr. was one of those elusive characters we family historians find difficult. An only child, at age seventeen, under Free Selection-conditional purchases, he secured 40 acres and was living with his parents John Snr. and Sarah Sheppard on a 500 acre sheep property at Four Post Creek, south of Deniliquin. I don't know when they arrived at Four Post Creek, I first found them on the sheep station in 1869 when John Jnr. was 13 years old. However, they could have arrived some years earlier as the electoral rolls for the previous 10 years are missing. John Snr. did not appear to be an easy man to get along with, as he and his neighbour ended up in Deniliquin court several times. John Snr. claimed he leased six or seven acres to William Cadman. Cadman's sheep trespassed on John Sheppard's other acres, destroying all the grass. William Cadman won that case. Three pounds costs and 10/- for cost of witnesses. Once again they were both in court, he charged defendant William Cadman, that he did feloniously steal, take and carry away a goose, the property of complainant and that he did unlawfully detain same after notice had been given by complainant. The Police Magistrate dismissed the case. A year later we find John Snr. and John Jnr. in court as witnesses of a dispute over land between William Cadman and Erasmus Wren. They certainly weren't very friendly with their neighbours. In 1883, my grandfather John Jnr. married Charlotte Nicholls at Echuca and he fathered three daughters. By 1893 grandma had had enough and divorced John for desertion. No family member ever heard of him again. John Snr. died on the 4th July, 1888 at Deniliquin, his death certificate stating he was 50 years in the colony and I am still searching for John Jnr.
