WU CHUNG CHI
Better Known Sammy Kum Kie
STORY OF SAMMY'S TOMBSTONE: Wu Chung Chi, better known as Sammy Kum Kie, former station cook and banker, lies buried in an unkempt, weedy grave at Deniliquin cemetery. His tombstone -- in eight broken pieces -- has been excavated in Spencer-st. railway goods yards. How Sammy missed this last honor - a tombstone inscribed in Chinese- can now be told.
Sammy Kum Kie worked on the sheep station of Falkiner and Sons, Boonoke, Conargo, near Deniliquin. He died on June 18 , 1943, aged 67, and was buried the following day. Mr. Charles Perrin, Deniliquin's funeral director, had to dig Sammy's grave. The grave-digger had been called up.
Mr. Perrin heard three years later from Sammy's daughter that a tombstone had been made for his grave and was being sent from Sydney.
The tombstone arrived in two parts and beyond repair. Mr. Perrin declined to take delivery and the tombstone stayed in a corner of the goods yard for 18 months. It was sent to Melbourne for disposal and the fragments were found last week by a railway-man.
Boonoke station bookkeeper (Mr. A. Peornitz) said yesterday: "It is a very sad story. All the blokes liked Sammy, I'll tell them about it. We'll have to see what we can do."
