WILLIAM WALTER LEDGER

On Saturday, William Walter Ledger, a rabbiter employed at Barrata Station for several years, was drowned in Barratta Creek, near the woolshed. Ledger was returning in a cart to his hut near the shed shortly after midday. His horse and cart were seen by another station-hand named Thomas Ross on the south side of the creek, and later the turn-out was seen by Ross on the opposite side of the creek. Ross heard a gurgling sound coming from the direction of the creek, and on going to ascertain the cause he saw Ledger disappear in the middle of the creek. As deceased’s clothes were on the edge of the water, it is surmised that when crossing the water a tuckerbox and other articles were thrown into the creek, and Ledger stripped off his clothes and swam in to recover them. Evidently he became exhausted or suffered with cramps in the cold water and without being able to call out for assistance he was drowned in about seven feet of water. The body was recovered a few hours later and on Sunday it was brought into the hospital morgue by Mr. C. J. Cameron, manager of Barratta.

Ledger, who was a returned soldier, was 55 years of age. In his younger days it is believed he held responsible positions in Victoria, but for several years he had been following the occupation of a rabbiter.

The remains were interred in the Deniliquin cemetery on Monday afternoon. A number of local returned soldiers joined in the cortege to the grave. The burial service was read by Rev. E. Jellicoe Rogers.
